The Essex Region Conservation Authority is celebrating the completion of phase one of a massive project to restore the Hillman Marsh barrier beach.
With the help of Nature Fresh Farms, another 50 wetland plants were added to the beach area. The business contributed $12,500 towards the purchase of plant materials.
“We’re contributing to a healthier, more resilient future for our community and the wildlife that depends on this marsh,” said Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Matt Quiring.
ERCA CAO Tim Byrne said the plants will help stabilize the shoreline and help dissipate waves from Lake Erie.
A variety of wetland species, including Cattail, Blue Flag Iris, Fox Sedge, and Joe Pye Reed, were previously planted over a 600 square metre space on the beach, but another two hectares need planting.
Eventually, the restoration project will create a high-crested barrier between the marsh and the lake.
