Dogbe Directs GARCC to Restore Reclaimed Kpeshie Lagoon Sections

The Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, Stan Xoese Dogbe, has directed the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) to immediately initiate ecological restoration efforts along the reclaimed sections of the Kpeshie Lagoon.
The directive follows the recent demolition of illegal physical structures constructed within the wetland’s protected buffer zone at Laboma. The clearance was executed by the Post-Flood Mitigation Task Force alongside the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) as part of broader efforts to mitigate severe flooding across the Greater Accra Region.
According to a update shared on his official Facebook page, Mr. Dogbe outlined a multi-agency approach to rehabilitate the fragile ecosystem, involving the Forestry Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Ghana Armed Forces.
“We will clear the debris, dredge the area, and plant coconut and other suitable trees to restore the reclaimed sections to their natural state,” Mr. Dogbe stated, emphasizing that the primary objective is to rebuild the lagoon’s flood-retention capacity and block future illegal encroachment.
The Kpeshie Lagoon basin has long been recognized as a critical flood-control zone for Accra. Over recent years, unauthorized land reclamation, sand-filling, and commercial developments destroyed green vegetation and severely obstructed the natural flow of water to the sea.
The restoration initiative builds on recent dredging and clearance operations across key flood-prone areas, including the Tesa Dam and Lafa Water Retention Basin. Officials maintain that turning the cleared Laboma buffer zone into a green space will provide long-term environmental protection while creating a safe, serene space for public leisure.
