First Formal Newsletter Update on GLDD Nourishment Project at Avon Beach

Posted on June 9, 2026

Coastal Science & Engineering—which is tasked with managing the beach nourishment project that is being performed in Avon by the county’s contractor, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company—has released its first newsletter announcing the latest updates on the project.

Construction Progress

Dare County has officially begun construction of the 2026 Avon Beach Renourishment Project, continuing a longterm coastal management strategy designed to help protect homes, infrastructure, and public access along the shore of Avon Village. Building upon the successful 2022 nourishment effort, this maintenance project will place approximately 375,000 cubic yards of sand along ~1 mile of coastline to restore beach width, strengthen dune protection, reduce erosion and overwash risks, and help safeguard NC Highway 12.

On Thursday, May 28, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company’s (GLDD) hopper dredge, Liberty Island, initiated beach fill operations for the Avon Beach Renourishment Project. Beginning in the central portion of the project area at Seaside Street (across from Food Lion), construction is moving north toward the Avon Fishing Pier before work continues southward to complete the project. As of June 8, dredging operations were between Yucca Street and Pampas Drive. Weather permitting, GLDD estimates it will take 2–3 weeks to complete the nourishment project.

Once pumping in the northern portion of the Avon project area is complete, contractors will begin working south from Pampas Drive until they complete the southern taper (across from Greenwood Place).
