Feds hire consultant to look at dredging 2 clogged Congamond Lake outlets

Posted on December 12, 2022

The Lake Management Committee said last week that the Natural Resources and Conservation Service has signed a contract with a consultant to explore the costs and processes needed to dredge Great Brook and Canal Brook.

Committee Chair Dick Grannells told the rest of the committee on Dec. 8 that he will likely meet with the NRCS consultant before the holidays. The consultant will not yet be conducting any design work, Grannells said, but will begin looking at the problem in the two waterways to determine how much it may cost and the logistics of clearing them both out.

Grannells said that both Great Brook and Canal Brook are clogged with debris, including hundreds of trees that fell during the 2011 ice storm. Grannells had been in discussions with the NRCS for more than a year before they had been given the green light this past spring to begin the initial stages of the project.
