The European Commission has awarded €22m in co-funding for the Hansalink 3 project, a cross-border initiative between the Port of Helsinki and the German Port of Lübeck-Travemünde. The Port of Helsinki will receive approximately €12m from the total allocation.
The €45m project aims to modernise port infrastructure, enhance digital systems, and improve the efficiency of passenger and freight traffic. Key components include the development of onshore power supply systems tailored to new Finnlines vessels, as well as the installation of automated mooring systems at both ports.
Hansalink 3 continues a long-standing cooperation between Helsinki and Lübeck-Travemünde under the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which began in 2014. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
“The substantial EU funding will allow ports to implement measures that enhance the competitiveness of the Helsinki–Travemünde corridor while supporting the EU’s sustainable transport goals,” said Vesa Marttinen, Vice President of Cargo at the Port of Helsinki. “Our close cooperation with the Lübeck Port Authority has resulted in a project that advances the unitised cargo and passenger vessel fleet on this route, ultimately benefiting Northern European businesses and consumers.”
