Eroded beach and dunes in Sandwich fortified with sand and beach grass

Posted on December 18, 2023

Sandwich’s storm-battered Town Neck Beach got its latest round of beach nourishment this fall.

Weeks Marine, working with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, piped sand ashore from a hydraulic dredge working at the east end of the Cape Cod Canal to deepen the channel. The sand was used to fortify the protective dune that fronts the parking lot ahead of the winter storm season. In past winters the area has been severely battered by erosion from northeast storms.

The final phase of the project is now underway, hand planting beach grass all along the newly shaped dune to give it more resiliency.
