We are honoured to announce that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has recognised Eleni Polychronopoulou’s leadership in empowering women in maritime, presenting her with a Letter of Commendation under the prestigious IMO Gender Equality Award framework, in recognition of her longstanding contribution to advancing gender equality and strengthening female participation across the maritime industry.
The recognition highlights her continuous efforts to strengthen female participation across maritime engineering, technology, and leadership through her roles as:
President of HEMEXPO – Hellenic Marine Equipment Manufacturers & Exporters
Vice Chair of SEA Europe (Shipyards’ & Maritime Equipment Association of Europe)
President of ERMA TECH GROUP
The IMO Assessment Panel particularly recognised her contribution to increasing the visibility and representation of women in technical and engineering-focused maritime roles.
The award ceremony took place at IMO Headquarters in London on 18 May 2026, as part of the International Day for Women in Maritime celebrations.
As Ms. Polychronopoulou stated:
“Seeing more women entering technical and engineering roles is one of the most encouraging developments for the future of shipping. I hope this recognition will inspire even more young women to pursue careers in maritime technology, engineering, and innovation.”
