ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD) – Initial work on the Isle of Palms beach renourishment project is expected to begin Tuesday as crews mobilize equipment for shoreline restoration efforts on the island.

City officials said residents and visitors may notice construction equipment and crews arriving on the beach in the coming days as contractors prepare to begin pumping sand. Equipment will be transported by barge from Dewees Inlet, and no significant beach closures are anticipated during the project.

The renourishment is part of the city’s long-term beach management plan and calls for the placement of up to 2.5 million cubic yards of sand along approximately 19,200 feet of shoreline.

According to project details, about 1.7 million cubic yards will be placed in the Wild Dunes area, while roughly 800,000 cubic yards will be used on the southern end of the island.

Contractor Marinex is expected to begin pumping sand in Reach 1 on July 17. Work will start near Mariner’s Walk and move north toward Ocean Point Drive, with that phase expected to continue through mid-August.
