OAK ISLAND, N.C. (WECT) – Dune vegetation planting resumed Monday, May 25, and will continue through Thursday, May 28, on two stretches of Oak Island beach, according to the town.

Crews will work between 5th Place West and 17th Place West, and between 33rd Place West and 48th Place West.

The planting is part of the town’s 2025-2026 Beach Nourishment Project. Crews are installing locally harvested sea oats on dune areas to help stabilize and strengthen the dunes, officials said.

The work is not expected to close the beach or public access points, but beachgoers may see one vehicle and multiple workers in the area. The town asks people nearby to stay clear of vehicles and equipment and not to stop or approach crews, as it can delay completion.

60,000 new plants have been successfully planted since operations began, according to the town’s website.
