OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) – Ocean Isle Beach officials announced dredging of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway will begin in the coming days, with material to be placed on the east end of the island.
Town officials said Southwind Construction will place about 35,000 cubic yards of sand west of the terminal groin, starting closest to the groin and moving westward. The placement area is expected to span about 700 linear feet.
After that work is completed, an additional 25,000 cubic yards of sand will be placed just east of the terminal groin. Town officials said they are also working with Southwind to place more material beyond the 25,000 cubic yards, but no plans have been finalized.
Town officials said the additional placement would be a short-term mitigation measure to meet the requirements of the terminal groin permit.
“All work will be completed no later than June 15, 2026,” officials stated.
