DP World’s London Gateway expansion has moved into the main dredging phase for its fifth container berth, marking a further construction milestone in the £350m ($473m) project.
Main contractor McLaughlin & Harvey said a specialist backhoe dredger is now excavating the riverbed in front of the new quay wall to create the depth and profile required for the future deep-water berth.
The dredging follows substantial progress on the quay wall, permanent anchoring system and backfilling works.
Berth 5 is being developed to accommodate the world’s largest containerships and add capacity at the Thames gateway. McLaughlin & Harvey said completion of the berth will establish London Gateway as the UK’s largest container port.
