A long-awaited project has started off the Rockland Fish Pier.

Dredging around the pier began Monday, Nov. 7. The dredging is expected to take a couple weeks to complete.

The project will cost $604,000 and is paid for with a combination of grants from the federal Economic Development Administration, Northern Border Regional Commission, and the Maine Department of Transportation, along with city funds.

City Manager Tom Luttrell said planning for the dredging started in 2018.

About 3,850 cubic yards of soils will be removed, adding about 7 feet of depth to sides of the pier. The spoils will be taken to an approved disposal site about 5 miles off Rockland.

The last dredging was about 2013.
