VICKSBURG, Miss.— Dr. Beth Fleming has been named director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), assuming the position in March. As director, she leads one of the most diverse research organizations in the world, comprising seven laboratories located across four states, with more than 2,600 employees, $1 billion in facilities and an annual program valued at $2.2 billion.

In addition to her role as ERDC director, Fleming serves as the director of research and development and chief scientist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). In this capacity, she is responsible for developing and guiding policies, providing strategic planning and overseeing research and development efforts for the USACE military and civil works programs, as well as initiatives supporting the warfighter. Fleming serves as a principal advisor to the chief of engineers on science and technology (S&T) matters, setting the conditions necessary for success across all S&T efforts within the organization.

“As we look to the future, I want us to stay bold and curious—pushing boundaries, embracing new technologies, and finding smarter, more resilient ways to support our mission,” said Fleming.  “I’m excited to roll up my sleeves and work alongside our talented team to keep ERDC at the forefront of engineering and scientific excellence.”

Fleming has been a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES) for 19 years and serviced four years prior in an acting SES role before her official appointment. Her extensive leadership experience within USACE includes serving as the Mississippi Valley Division regional business director, ERDC deputy director, acting chief information officer/G-6 and director of the ERDC Environmental Laboratory. During her tenure as ERDC deputy director, Fleming played a pivotal role in guiding strategic initiatives, enhancing operational efficiencies and fostering collaborative partnerships across multiple research disciplines. Her leadership has been instrumental in advancing ERDC’s mission and strengthening its position as a premier research and development organization.

Fleming earned a doctoral degree in civil and environmental engineering from Louisiana State University in 2000, a master’s degree in chemical/environmental engineering from Mississippi State University in 1994 and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Mississippi State University in 1988. Her training includes Army Senior Leader Communication, Force Integration/Management for Senior Leaders and the Federal Executive Institute.

She holds certifications in the Systems Planning, Research, Development and Engineering Program at Levels II and III. Fleming’s numerous awards and honors include the Superior Civilian Service Award, the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award, the Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the Bronze Order of the DeFleury.  She was also recognized among Mississippi’s 50 Leading Business Women in 2007 and named a Mississippi State University Distinguished Fellow in 2003.
