DP World has announced plans to construct a new temperature-controlled logistics hub at the Port of Antwerp, initiating the project with an initial investment of €48 million and projecting a total long-term investment of approximately €100 million.
Developed in partnership with logistics real estate developer Montea and Maatschappij Linkerscheldeoever (MLSO), the facility will occupy an 83,000 m² site adjacent to the DP World Antwerp Gateway terminal.
Facility Specifications and Multi-Sector Focus
Subject to permitting, construction is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2027, with completion anticipated in the second quarter of 2028.
Key operational features of the development include:
- Specialized Warehousing: Encompasses over 55,000 m² of warehouse and office space, targeting BREEAM Excellent sustainability certification.
- Cargo Allocation: Approximately half of the warehouse capacity will be dedicated to perishables—such as bananas and fresh produce—while the remainder will support healthcare, pharmaceutical, chemical, and technology sector logistics.
- Value-Added Services: Offers multi-temperature storage zones, cargo consolidation and deconsolidation, and specialized handling services.
- Multimodal Infrastructure: Features direct access to ocean terminal operations, as well as road, rail, and inland waterway transport networks for European distribution.
Strategic Positioning in Europe
Rainer Schmid, Chief Commercial Officer for DP World Europe, noted that placing the cold chain hub next to Antwerp Gateway provides shippers with streamlined port, warehousing, and inland transport services from a single point.
Xavier Van Reeth, Country Director Belgium at Montea, and Boudewijn Vlegels, Chairperson of MLSO, emphasized that the project expands high-value logistics capacity in the Waaslandhaven area while strengthening Antwerp’s position as a primary European trade gateway.
