DP World has launched a €53.8m ($60m) electrification project at its container terminal in Romania’s Port of Constanța, covering cargo-handling equipment, yard infrastructure and shore power.
The investment includes electrical infrastructure for 29 container blocks, approximately 6 km of power connections for future electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and 10 electric terminal tractors with a dedicated charging facility.
Two shore power systems will also be installed, allowing vessels to connect to electricity while alongside.
Funding includes an EU grant of up to €19.7m, a loan of up to €25m from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and a contribution from DP World Constanța.
A further €46.2m investment phase is planned, covering remotely operated electric RTGs, two electric mobile harbour cranes and additional terminal tractors.
The initial project is scheduled for completion by August 2028.
