There is a need for dredging of rivers to prevent future flooding.

Minisiter for Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka highlighted this while visiting flood affected areas in the Western Division on Thursday.

“We need a consistent program that includes dredging that hopefully would alleviate the problem we have in Ba,” he said.

While visiting Nawajikuma tramline, Nawaka area in Nadi, Mr Ditoka said they would work with the Nadi Town Council on how best the flooding issues could be resolved.

“They have shown us some issues that maybe we can work with the Nadi municipality in trying to alleviate it by having an open drain that is enough to take all the water which is spilling over from the two lakes behind us.”

He said an emergency meeting with the Commissioner Western Apolosi Lewaqai would be called this week in the hope to get some solution.

Mr Ditoka also shed light on the need for a drainage board.

“It is something we need to get up and running quickly and something I will talk to the line minster about when I go back to Suva and I will advocate it at the Cabinet level so that issues like blocked drainage are sorted.”
