HII has promoted Derek Murphy to vice president of new construction aircraft carriers at its Newport News Shipbuilding division.
Murphy, a two-decade company veteran, will now be in charge of the shipyard’s production of all new construction aircraft carriers, including the USS John F. Kennedy, USS Enterprise and USS Doris Miller, HII said Thursday.
“Derek brings extensive experience from his time in the Navy and both HII shipyards to his new role,” commented Kari Wilkinson, president of the NNS division.
Derek Murphy’s Career Highlights
Murphy began his career with HII in 2002, when the company was still part of Northrop Grumman. He served as an aviation program manager supporting the EA-6B and EA-18G programs before joining HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division in 2007.
He began working at the Newport News Shipbuilding division in 2020 as program director on the USS John F. Kennedy.
Prior to transitioning to the industry, Murphy spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a naval flight officer for carrier-based A-6E Intruder and EA-6B Prowler aircraft.
He received an MBA from Eastern Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University.
