Members of the Engineering Corps of Bangladesh Army are working to prevent erosion on the Marine Drive road at Sabrang area in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. The road is breaking due to the impact of the sea tide for the last few days.

It is seen on the spot that eight cracks on the damaged road of more than two kilometers turned big in three areas at the Sabrang union in Teknaf upazila on Thursday (August 3) and Friday (August 4). About 1000 meters of the broken road is being placed with geo-bag sand embankment.

On Saturday (August 5) from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm, although the tidal wave did not cause any new erosion on the road, the damaged areas have become larger. The Munder Dale section on Marine Drive road has been embanked with two layers of geo-bags. However, now there are big waves coming and crashing on the geo-bags. Renovations are closed due to high tide. More than half a hundred bushes were uprooted in different areas by the tide.

Teknaf UNO Mohammad Kamruzzaman, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Erfanul Haque Chowdhury and Deputy Assistant Engineer of Roads and Highways Division (RHD) Ranjan Kumar Biswas came to inspect the road on Sunday (August 6) at around 12:30 pm.

Local UP member Salim said that no new erosion was seen. People were saved to some extent as the damaged areas were quickly repaired with geo-bags. However, the construction of sustainable dams is necessary to protect the Sabrang Tourism Park and economic zone as well as the population. Otherwise, the road may be washed away by the tide at any time.

UNO Kamruzzaman said that due to the effect of the full moon, the height of the tidal water has increased more than normal, causing erosion in various parts of Marine Drive. Members of Bangladesh Army’s Engineering Corps are working to prevent erosion.
