The United States Army Corps of Engineers (Corps), Portland District, will host a virtual public meeting May 12, 2022, from 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. to present information on the ongoing cleanup of contaminants found at Bradford Island from historical waste operations and disposal at the site. This is the first public meeting since the site’s inclusion on EPA’s National Priority List (Superfund) March 16. In the meeting, the Corps and the EPA will:

  • Review the recent National Priorities List (NPL) listing of the site
  • Provide historical information about Bradford Island
  • Review next steps for cleaning up the site
  • Review cleanup work performed to date
  • Discuss community involvement and the creation of a Community Advisory Group (CAG)
  • Provide an opportunity for the public to ask questions and make comments.

Bradford Island is located about three miles west of Cascade Locks, Oregon and 40 miles east of Portland, Oregon. Bradford Island is owned and operated by the Corps and located within the Bonneville Dam complex on the Columbia River. Since 1998, USACE has conducted studies to assess the nature and extent of the contamination, assessed the risk to human health and the environment, and taken actions to prevent the migration of contamination. Removal actions that have taken place so far have included removal of electrical equipment and contaminated sediment from the river in 2002 and 2007, respectively. Comprehensive cleanup remedies are being developed.

Virtual Public Meeting. Due to ongoing concerns surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic and consistent with EPA guidance regarding the use of virtual alternatives in lieu of in-person public meetings, a virtual public meeting to discuss the Bradford Island project will be held via internet and telephonic means. As conditions continue to improve, the Corps intends to hold future meetings in person.
