Corps of Engineers begins multi-phased improvements to Lexington Harbor

Posted on May 28, 2026

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Detroit District, will begin a multi-phase project in Lexington Harbor, Michigan with the first phase involving dredging and breakwater revitalization work set to start as early as May 28, weather permitting.

Phase One will focus on hydraulic dredging of the outer harbor. The contractor will then mechanically dredge to address shoaling impacting harbor access and the inner federal channel and to re-establish recreational boating access to the inner harbor.

Dean Marine and Excavating Inc., of Mount Clemens, Michigan, was awarded the $1.8 million contract to dredge the harbor on May 7.

“We recognize that Lexington State Harbor is a vital hub for local recreation and the regional economy, and we truly appreciate the public’s patience as we undertake this necessary work,” said Aerik LaFave, USACE, Detroit District project manager. “By executing this essential dredging and the subsequent breakwall repairs, we are actively preserving the harbor’s structural integrity and long-term navigability. While these temporary closures are undoubtedly an inconvenience, the lasting benefits for boaters, anglers, and the Village of Lexington will be substantial.”

To ensure the safety of the public and efficiency for work crews, the dredging operations require a full marina and boating access site closure through July 31, or earlier if dredging is completed ahead of schedule, as dredging equipment will block ingress and egress between the harbor and Lake Huron during inner harbor mechanical dredging. Operations are authorized to continue 24 hours per day, seven days per week with the exception of the Independence Day holiday weekend.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will maintain up-to-date closure information at https://www.michigan.gov/PRDKeyProjects#Lexington.

Inner harbor sediment will be transported by barge to Dickinson Island Confined Disposal Facility in the St. Clair River approximately 56 miles away one way (Could modify to say approximately 112 miles away round trio). Outer Harbor material will be placed nearshore 1,500 feet to 3,600 feet South of the Southern breakwater.

In conjunction, necessary repairs to the Lexington breakwater will also be made to the structure to fill voids in the stone.

M-K Construction Co., Inc., of Brownstown, Michigan, was awarded the $11.6 million contract April 27 to overhaul the rubble mound breakwater structure that currently allows sand shoaling into the harbor.

Construction involves drilling into the structure and creating a grout curtain wall to make it impermeable, as well as reconstructing the concrete cement walkway. Working hours for the grouting work are scheduled for 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The project is scheduled to conclude Nov. 4.

The breakwall will be closed to pedestrian traffic during construction. The public is asked to adhere to posted closure notices and fencing established for safety. Work on both projects will be paused during federal holidays.
