Corps of Engineers announces plans to permanently close Belton Lake Overlook

Original Report: Officials closed the Belton Dam overlook after police expressed concerns back in May 2022

Posted on April 3, 2024

After closing just two years ago, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Belton Lake Project Office announced it is permanently closing the Belton Lake Overlook, effective immediately.

The overlook, located on FM 2271 on the northwestern side of the Belton Dam, was designed to be a flood risk management mission asset, allowing USACE staff access to monitor and maintain the dam.

The location was previously closed in April of 2022 due to public safety concerns at the time. USACE says those safety concerns, along with coordination with TxDOT, led them to permanently close the area with plans for TxDOT to install guardrail fencing.

USACE says Belton Lakeview Park is located on the southern side of the dam near the Belton Lake Project Office and is a safe, alternate site to view the lake. Parking areas between the Overlook pavilion and the Belton Lake Water Control Tower provide safe access for visitors to view the lake.
