Corps closes four locks and dams for maintenance, end of navigation season

Posted on November 1, 2022

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will close four locks and dams in the coming months for routine maintenance and end of the 2022 navigation season.

Lower St. Anthony Falls lock and Lock and Dam 1, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, will close commercial and recreational vessel traffic on Tuesday, Nov. 1 for the navigation season.

Locks and Dams 3, Welch, Minnesota, and 4, Alma, Wisconsin, will close to commercial and recreational vessel traffic on Monday, Dec. 5, through Sunday, March 12, 2023, for miter gate anchorage bar replacement.

The St. Paul District navigation program provides a safe, reliable, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable waterborne transportation system on the Upper Mississippi River for the movement of commercial goods and for national security needs. To do this, the district maintains a 9-foot navigation channel and 13 locks and dams from Minneapolis to Guttenberg, Iowa. Keeping this system open is vital to the nation’s economy.
