Corps announces temporary closure at Big Sandy Lake boat ramp

Big Sandy Lake south boat landing

Posted on September 21, 2021

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will temporarily close the south boat landing at Big Sandy Lake, near McGregor, Minnesota, to reconstruct the ramp, beginning Sept. 20. The ramp will be closed for about two weeks.

“This routine maintenance is to improve the conditions at this heavily utilized boat ramp and ensure the continued safety of our visitors and their equipment at our recreation area,” said Tammy Frauenshuh, lead natural resources specialist.

Alternate ramps for the public include the Sandy River boat launch and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ boat ramps around Big Sandy Lake.

Over time, activities such as driving boats onto trailers at boat landings damages boat ramps and propeller wash erodes the sediment at the end of the ramp surface and creates a large hole.

The Corps of Engineers is the nation’s leading federal providers of outdoor recreation. The St. Paul District operates 49 recreation areas, ranging from public boat landings along the Mississippi River to visitor centers at our locks to full-service campgrounds.
