City council to consider new bid for Frawley Pond dredging

Posted on January 2, 2024

At their upcoming meeting, on Jan. 2, the Spearfish City Council is set to review a bid for the dredging of Frawley Pond.

Heavy rain caused sediment from the nearby Sky Ridge construction site to run off into the pond over the summer. Because erosion control is part of the general permitting process the city goes through for commercial development, the runoff was considered a violation of the South Dakota Water Pollution Control Act. The city was fined $25,995, and it is required to dredge the pond before June 1.

The last bid city council reviewed for the dredging came in at more than a million dollars, at least $800,000 more than the city had expected the effort to cost.

Viet and Company, Inc. submitted the bid on tap for review. They’ll charge the city about $393,605 to dredge the pond. The next lowest bid from the December bidding process was $624,500 from Dredge America.
