Buxton Civic Association asks public to keep Old Lighthouse Road clear during nourishment project

The Buxton Civic Association (BCA) is asking residents and visitors to keep the right side and end of Old Lighthouse Road free of parked vehicles once beach nourishment operations get underway in Buxton.

In a recent announcement, the association said contractor Great Lakes Dredge & Dock has requested that the area remain accessible while work is underway to help the project proceed safely and efficiently.

“We understand this may be inconvenient, but keeping this area accessible is necessary to help the project move as safely, smoothly, and efficiently as possible,” the BCA stated.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to use the overflow parking area at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse while construction is ongoing.

The request comes as Dare County prepares for the start of the 2026 Buxton beach nourishment project, which is expected to begin later this month. Current plans call for the placement of approximately 2 million cubic yards of sand along a 2.9-mile stretch of oceanfront.

Construction is expected to last about 90-95 days under the base project. As work progresses, the dredge will pump sand onto the beach through a pipeline system, with crews typically advancing along the shoreline at a rate of about 1,000 feet per day, depending on weather and ocean conditions.

The nourishment effort is designed to widen beaches, strengthen storm protection, and help offset years of erosion along Buxton’s oceanfront.
