Port of São Francisco do Sul has planted 156,736 native plant seedlings in the dunes of the 8.8 km beach expansion in Itapoá, Santa Catarina. The goal is to reach up to 280,000 native plants by December 2026, reinforcing dune stability against coastal erosion
Itapoá, located on the northern coastline of Santa Catarina, has already received 156,736 native plant seedlings in the dunes formed by Brazil’s largest beach expansion. The project has restored 8.8 kilometers of coastline, including sections that had been virtually swallowed by the sea.
The information was published by NSC Total on September 12, 2026, in a report by Bárbara Siementkowski, with data from the Port of São Francisco do Sul, which is responsible for this environmental initiative.
Planting of native seedlings in Itapoá surpasses 156,000
The Port of São Francisco do Sul reported that 156,736 seedlings have already been planted and that 194,273 have been produced so far. The number of seedlings ready thus exceeds the volume that has already been planted in the dunes.
Work continues on three fronts: species collection, nursery cultivation, and planting in the dunes. The operation is part of the beach expansion project’s schedule.
Expansion recovered 8.8 km of coastline that had been swallowed by the sea
The project has widened 8.8 kilometers of coastline in Itapoá with sediments obtained from dredging the Babitonga Bay. It is the largest beach expansion in Brazil.
