Posted on August 26, 2024

Three terminals have been granted for ten years – without the possibility of extension – in the port of Recife (State of Pernambuco), one in the port of Rio de Janeiro (State of Rio de Janeiro) and one in the port of Rio Grande (State of Rio Grande do Sul)

The government of Brazil and the National Agency for Maritime Transport (Antaq) yesterday held the auction of five port terminals, with expected investments of 78,3 million reais (the equivalent of approximately 13 million euros). Three terminals have been granted for ten years – without the possibility of extension – in the port of Recife (State of Pernambuco), one in the port of Rio de Janeiro (State of Rio de Janeiro) and one in the port of Rio Grande (State of Rio Grande do Sul). The three areas of the port of Recife were assigned to the Brazilian companies Liquiport, Usina Petribu and SCS Armazens Gerais; the port area of Rio de Janeiro was granted to the Ultrapar group, while the port terminal of Rio Grande do Sul was entrusted to Sagres Operacoes Portuarias. Initially scheduled for May 23, the auction was postponed due to the flooding emergency caused by the heavy rains that hit the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul throughout the month of May.

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, declared that the government intends to organize another 30 auctions in the next two years, with investments of around 15 billion reais (the equivalent of around 2,46 billion euros). “It is a sector that is growing a lot in Brazil. Last year we grew by 6 percent. This year, in the first half of the year, we have already grown by more than 4 percent. In the container sector alone there was a growth of around 22 percent, which demonstrates the strengthening of the Brazilian port agenda. We hope that by 2024 the national port sector can grow by around 6 percent or more,” Costa Filho said. In addition to expanding logistics activity for the flow of agricultural production, the government reports in a statement, the contracts will give “impetus to the economic development of port regions, improve terminal infrastructure and create new jobs”.
