Brasil to invest US$175mn to expand port terminal in Amazonas

Posted on June 8, 2026

The Brazilian government will invest 875.9 million (mn) reais (US$175 million) in the expansion and improvement of a passenger terminal in Amazonas, known as the Manaus Moderna Terminal.

The project, led by the Ministry of Ports and Airports, in partnership with the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit), will have funding from the federal program known as Novo PAC (Growth Acceleration Program).

The works will reorganize the flow of vessels, modernize the boarding and disembarkation areas, and enhance safety and comfort conditions for users of the river transport system.

“In the Amazon, rivers structure people’s lives. Investing in the Manaus Moderna Terminal means investing directly in the population’s mobility, with more safety, comfort, and dignity for those who depend on navigation on a daily basis”, said Otto Burlier, national secretary of Waterways and Navigation of the ministry, in a statement.

The current structure has been adapted over the years to meet the growth in passenger demand, but it no longer reflects the terminal’s importance as the main fluvial gateway in and out of the region.

Now, the structure to be built will include floating piers, movable bridges, embarkation and disembarkation terminals, operational areas, parking lots, a sewage treatment station, a power substation, and solutions focused on accessibility and safety.

The terminal expansion works are expected to be completed in 2029. After completion, the terminal will have the capacity to handle around 3.5 million passengers per year.
