For a year and a half, we have been looking forward to this milestone: our new subsea rock installation vessel, the Windpiper, setting sail for its first project. Today, the Windpiper departed the Port of Rotterdam to load its first 45,500 metric tons of rock at a quarry in Norway. Once these rocks have been loaded into the vessel’s two cargo holds, the Windpiper will continue to the Baltic Sea to carry out its first subsea rock installation works.
This maiden project marks an important milestone. Subsea rock installation plays a key role in protecting and stabilizing offshore infrastructure on the seabed, including assets that support the growing offshore wind industry as well as cables and pipelines. With the start of operations of the Windpiper, we are further strengthening our capacity to contribute to offshore energy projects in Europe and the rest of the world.
The Windpiper is also a great example of how expertise, teamwork and innovations come together. Over the past year and a half, colleagues from across the company have worked on transforming the vessel into a state-of-the-art subsea rock installation vessel ready for this next chapter.
