Beaches and coastal areas are, by definition, exposed to the forces of waves, currents and wind. In some parts of the world, coastal erosion can shift the shoreline several meters inland in a single year. That is why beach nourishment projects – adding fresh sand to the shoreline using a trailing suction hopper dredger – are so important.
Boskalis carries out these operations with its trailing suction hopper dredgers, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Using our brand-new Seaway, among other vessels, we dredge sand from the seabed in designated borrow areas and pump it ashore through a long pipeline. There, our sandfill specialists spread the sand across the beach to reinforce and widen the coastline.
