Beach replenishment work is now progressing at both ends of the project area – in Rehoboth Beach and Fenwick Island. Public Affairs Officer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Steve Rochette, tells the Talk of Delmarva that the contractor anticipates completing work in Rehoboth on May 22 and starting Dewey Beach on May 22. It’s hoped that the work in Fenwick Island will be completed by Memorial Day weekend and dredging at Bethany and South Bethany are expected to take place in June. This is pending any weather issues or equipment problems that could arise.
Rochette adds there is a progress meeting on the replenishment project later this week.
Over the past week or so the pipes and other equipment for beach replenishment have been moving into place in Fenwick Island. Mayor Natalie Magdeburger tells the Talk of Delmarva that their replenishment project began first thing Monday morning. The dredging was able to start earlier than originally planned with an additional dredge was brought into the project. Weather permitting, the work in Fenwick Island is expected to be completed by the Memorial Day weekend. Regardless, the Army Corps of Engineers say any dredging, from Fenwick Island to Rehoboth Beach, will be suspended through the holiday weekend.
