Work was underway Thursday to secure a sand and gravel barge that ran aground in North Vancouver near Kings Mill Walk.
The barge, which was carrying sand and rock dredged from Burrard Inlet, ran aground sometime before 9 a.m., close to a marine area used for barge anchorage. It was not being towed at the time.
Alex Munro, spokesman for the Port of Vancouver, said authorities will investigate how the barge ran aground.
Work was underway Thursday afternoon to offload the sand and gravel load to another barge and stabilize the barge.
Munro added the barge wasn’t blocking any navigational channels and wasn’t leaking any fuel.
Munro said the barge wasn’t in any danger of becoming another English Bay Barge – a massive barge that ran aground on Vancouver’s Sunset Beach in a windstorm in November 2021 and remained a fixture on the beach until it was dismantled in late 2022.
Munro said the barge would likely be moved later Thursday on a high tide.
