The Village of Bald Head Island has announced that it is receiving $4.5 million for its beach renourishment efforts thanks to the signing of six appropriations bills over the weekend.

The funds will go to the village’s 2025 Coastal Storm Damage Reduction Project, which aims to dredge sand from Jay Bird Shoals and place it on the west end of the terminal groin, which protects island land from washing away into the ocean.

The village also got its U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit for the project last Friday, March 8.

With the GO bonds passed by residents in the election and set to be certified at a special meeting on March 28, the village now will need to go to the Local Government Commission to get approval to borrow up to $20.2 million in bonds.

This puts the project on schedule to start at the start of next year and be completed by May of 2025, though the timeline is subject to change.
