THE Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) and the City Engineer’s Office (CEO) will conduct dredging activities along Mambulok creek this month to ease flooding in some areas of Bacolod.
Executive Assistant Joemarie Vargas, cluster head of DRRMO, said Sunday, January 10, 2021, that they will hold a meeting this week with the City Legal Office to finalize the plan and to relocate affected residents in the area of Barangay 8.
He said they will determine the total number of families that will be affected by the dredging activities in the area.
“We will relocate first the affected families, who are occupying the city’s property. Usually, floodwaters coming from the Mambulok creek affect the areas in Barangays 2, 8, 10, 12, SM City Mall and portions of the public plaza,” he added.
Vargas said on Friday, about eight barangays in Bacolod City were affected by floods due to heavy rains triggered by a Low-Pressure Area with the combined effect of the tail-end of the frontal system.
The rains caused floods in some areas of Purok Masinadyahon, Barangay Bata; Barangays 3 and 4; Puroks Santol and Carvic, Barangay Mandalagan; Parreno Street, Barangay 28; GK Village, Barangay Banago; and Hernaez Street, Barangay Taculing.
Vargas said these areas were hit by floods because of clogged waterways due to heavy rainfall.
Although there was no reported evacuation, he said they continue to monitor these places and other areas.
Vargas said they will also conduct dredging along Mandalagan River, which causes flooding at the portion of Lacson Street especially in the area in front of Robinson’s Mall and the Capitol Ville Subdivision.
In case of emergency, residents may call the city’s emergency hotline 911 or telephone numbers 432-3871 to 73 and the CRRDMO telephone number 432-3879 and 709-1633. Residents may also call Amity volunteer Brigade at 433-3244, Chamber Volunteer Brigade at 432-0111, Bureau of Fire Protection at 434-5022/23, Red Cross at 435-0324 and the Bacolod Traffic Authority at 704-1443.
