Avon Beach nourishment project with Great Lakes Dredge & Dock is ahead of schedule; Work continues north towards Avon Pier

Posted on June 29, 2022

Contractor Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. has announced that, due to the significant amount of progress that has been made since the project began in Avon on Sunday, June 19, 2022, beach nourishment operations have not been paused in order to begin work in Buxton.

After evaluating the project schedule, the company has decided to allow the dredge Ellis Island to continue pumping sand along the beach heading north toward the Avon Pier until the dredge reaches its production limit from the current landing point.

Once that production limit has been reached, the Ellis Island will be released from Avon and will move downshore to begin performing beach nourishment in Buxton.

When the Ellis Island moves from Avon to Buxton, the Avon beach nourishment project will be paused until a second dredge, the Liberty Island, arrives in Dare County after the Fourth of July. At that time, beach nourishment operations will resume in Avon using the Liberty Island.

ORV Ramp 38 Reminder:

Throughout this summer, Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s off-road vehicle (ORV) Ramp 38 will remain open, but visitors with beach driving permits can expect some intermittent, short-term delays entering and exiting the ramp as beach nourishment equipment is moved safely to and from the beach.

Although the ramp will remain open, the parking lot at ORV Ramp 38 will be closed this summer. Visitors who planned to park in the parking lot at ORV Ramp 38 should instead consider using nearby parking lots at Haulover Sound Access and Kite Point Sound Access.
