BUFFALO, N.Y. — The US Army Corps of Engineers will be giving Buffalo Harbor a major facelift this summer.
The Corps of Engineers has begun a dredging around 190,000 cubic yards of sediment from the bottom of the harbor. Of that sediment, about 80,000 cubic yards will be placed in the Outer Harbor.
The Corps says that the 80,000 cubic yards of sediment will be placed at the bottom of Shipping Slip 3, which is just next to Wilkeson Pointe. This part of the project is expected to start August 1 and will be finished by August 25, the Corps said in a statement. For safety concerns during this part of the project kayaks and paddleboats are not permitted in the water.
Buffalo’s harbor is usually dredged every two years, and was last dredged in 2024. During that operation, around 80,000 cubic yards of sediment was removed from the harbor.
Boaters and fishermen are asked to stay away from the dredging equipment while crews are working.
The majority of the sediment that will be removed will be tested in coordination with the EPA, and will then be taken to the Corps of Engineers’ disposal facility.
