Arcadis to implement $750m Dutch hydrogen network

Posted on January 30, 2023

Dutch consultant Arcadis is working on plans for the roll-out of a $750m high-pressure hydrogen network across the Netherlands.

Arcadis is acting on behalf of client Hynetwork Services, a subsidiary of state-owned gas company Gasunie.

The hydrogen infrastructure will rely on natural gas pipelines for about 85% of its length.

The project will form part of a network connecting the Netherland’s five major industrial areas: Noord, IJmond, Rijnmond, Zeeland and Limburg, with links to the hydrogen storage facility in Zuidwending and neighbouring countries.

Arcadis’ role includes the creation of a detailed environmental impact report, including health and safety measures and ecological and archaeological studies.

Niels Schallenberg, Arcadis’ resilience director in the Netherlands, said: “The start of the hydrogen network in the Netherlands is an important step towards achieving a carbon neutral energy supply in the future.

“By reusing existing infrastructure as much as possible, the impact on the environment remains limited. This hydrogen network is a relevant part of the energy transition for industry and we are proud to be working with Gasunie on this crucial project.”

Arcadis’ preparatory works are already under way, with the project due to be completed in two to three years.
