Anduril’s $3.7 Billion Maritime Facility Replaces Planned Wind Component Plant at Sparrows Point

A year ago, this site was supposed to build monopiles and towers.

Now its going to naval shipbuilding.

US Wind has relinquished its lease at Sparrows Point in Baltimore to Anduril Industries.

The planned Sparrows Point Steel facility was supposed to manufacture offshore wind components and create hundreds of jobs. Even after the federal government withdrew $47.4 million in grant funding last year, US Wind said the plant would still move forward.

It isn’t moving forward there now.

Anduril is taking the site for Arsenal-2, a $3.7 billion maritime manufacturing facility supporting the U.S. submarine industrial base.

What interests me isn’t just that one project stopped and another arrived.

The waterfront didn’t lose its industrial value.
The customer changed.

Deepwater access, heavy fabrication, steel trades and maritime logistics can serve more than one ocean industry.

For offshore wind, though, losing a planned domestic fabrication site is another reminder that the project schedule depends on infrastructure that has its own commercial clock.
