Amazon and Skyborn Renewables have signed a 600 MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for carbon-free electricity from the Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, marking the largest single PPA ever signed in Germany and one of the largest in Europe.
The agreement provides Skyborn Renewables with the long-term revenue certainty needed to move forward with the construction of the Gennaker project, which is expected to become the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. The project will add up to 976.5 MW of new offshore wind capacity to Germany’s electricity system, supporting the country’s energy transition while strengthening domestic renewable power generation and energy security.
Located approximately 15 kilometres north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Gennaker has been developed by Skyborn Renewables from its earliest stages. The company secured the project’s construction permit in December 2025. The wind farm will consist of 63 offshore wind turbines rated at 15 MW each and, once operational, is expected to generate enough carbon-free electricity to power the equivalent of more than one million German households annually.
Construction is expected to begin after Skyborn reaches financial close in the summer of 2026, with commercial operations anticipated towards the end of 2028. The project is expected to make a significant contribution to Germany’s target of reaching 30 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030, while also diversifying renewable electricity generation in the Baltic Sea.
Beyond its energy contribution, Gennaker represents a major investment in the regional economy. Skyborn estimates the project will bring approximately €3 billion of investment to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The development will rely on experienced contractors, including German manufacturer EEW Special Pipe Construction GmbH (EEW SPC), which will produce the monopile foundations in Rostock, around 40 kilometres from the project site. The contract is expected to support the local supply chain and help secure jobs at EEW SPC, which currently employs around 1,000 people.
Manuela Schwesig, Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, described Gennaker as the largest energy investment ever made in the state. She said the project would help advance the energy transition, supply businesses and households with renewable electricity, attract energy-intensive industries and create long-term economic value and employment opportunities in the region.
For Amazon, the agreement represents its largest single carbon-free energy deal in Germany to date. Including Gennaker, the company’s German portfolio now comprises 12 carbon-free energy projects with a combined capacity of more than 1.3 GW. Once fully operational, these projects are expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of more than 1.8 million German homes each year.
Amazon is currently Europe’s largest corporate purchaser of carbon-free energy and remains committed to its Climate Pledge target of reaching net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040. According to Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager for Amazon Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the agreement demonstrates how long-term collaboration between the public and private sectors can accelerate Germany’s energy transition while supporting investment, employment and energy security.
Adam Thomsen, Chief Development Officer at Skyborn Renewables, described the agreement as a defining milestone for both Gennaker and the company. He said the project serves as a blueprint for delivering large-scale offshore wind in a reliable and scalable manner, while highlighting the growing need to combine renewable electricity generation with the infrastructure required to build a more resilient energy system.
