A shipyard in Turkmenistan begins assembling a dredger from Damen

Posted on April 3, 2024

The Balkan shipbuilding and ship repair plant in Turkmenistan will begin assembling the CSD 650 dredger from the Dutch Damen Shipyards Group under the supervision of the company’s engineers. The assembly of the dredger is carried out by order of the Söwda Gurluşyk Maslahat enterprise, reports the Agency of Maritime and River Transport of Turkmenistan.

Before the start of assembly, a representative of the Balkan plant visited the city of Nijkerk in the Netherlands. There he took part in testing the CSD 650 dredger. This allowed him to become familiar with the technical characteristics of the vessel and the features of its operation. Also, a representative of the plant prepared to accept design documentation and parts for assembly in Turkmenistan.

During the visit to the Netherlands, meetings were held with the management of Damen Shipyards Group. At the meetings, localization was discussed – the organization of joint production of Damen dredgers in Turkmenistan.

Damen dredgers are often used in Turkmenistan for dredging, construction and repair of port facilities, sand and gravel extraction.

The assembly of the CSD 650 dredger at the Balkan plant will be the first step towards localizing the production of Damen dredgers in Turkmenistan. This will reduce the cost of purchasing ships, create new jobs and improve the skills of Turkmen shipbuilders.
