Peak bodies and politicians have been the loudest voices in the debate over developing Queensland’s Galilee Basin, but what do the communities that will be directly affected have to say? In the first in a series of reports, Cathy Van Extel visits the Abbot Point port for a firsthand look.
Just north of Bowen, Abbot Point is Australia’s most northerly deepwater coal port. In 2011 Indian company Adani paid the Queensland government $1.8 billion for a 99-year lease of the terminal, heralding ambitious plans for its expansion.
