£92m earmarked to protect Welsh coastal areas

Posted on January 20, 2025

A total of £92m has been earmarked to improve coastal flood defence barriers in Denbighshire. The commitment for the fund is coming from the National Wealth Fund (NWF).

The money is being given as a debt financing package provided via NWF’s local authority function. It will be offered as long-term loan at the lowest cost for local authority infrastructure projects. It will facilitate Denbighshire County Council’s restoration and enhancement of sea defences in neighbouring Rhyl and Prestatyn.

The existing defences at the two sites have been deemed to no longer meet current standards, and the improvements will provide better protection to hundreds of businesses and homes for several decades.

At Rhyl, the existing sea defences need to be ramped up along with work to prevent erosion and building a concrete façade for absorbing energy from waves. The planned work at Prestatyn includes the construction of an earth embankment set back from the frontline defences to allow flood water overtopping the current defences to be contained until it can discharge back to sea. Construction work for both the projects is well under way and is on track to be completed in September this year for Rhyl and by this June for Prestatyn.
