Posted on August 5, 2024

The WEDA Safety Commission was honored to present five Safety Excellence Awards this year:

  • Safety Excellence Award for a Dredging Company: Matthews Brothers, LLC
  • Safety Excellence Award for a Dredging Project: CEDA Tailings Management and Environmental Solutions, IOL Kearl Lake WETA Dredge Project
  • Safety Excellence Award for a Dredging Trade Partner: GEI Consultants, Inc.
  • Safety Excellence Award for a Dredging Stakeholder: S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District, Dredge Jadwin

Below are some additional details on the award winners and their commitment to safety.

Great Lakes’ safety culture is built on a foundation of employee engagement and empowerment. GLDD team members understand that they have a voice in safety processes, that their personal safety is highly valued, and that they all have a duty to each other and their families to speak up and work safely.

After 25 years in the industry, Matthews Brothers Dredging, LLC continues to maintain a robust safety program and culture throughout their company. Employees recognize that safety requires minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, and day-by-day commitment and management consistently supports them in dedicating time and attention to safe operations.

CEDA’s business philosophy is built on the core values of Safety, Our People, Integrity, Our Customers, Communication, Trust, Accountability, and Leadership. The TMES team demonstrated each of these core values throughout their work.

Safety excellence on the Dredge Jadwin relies on an established safety culture, daily toolbox meetings, continuous teamwork, and personal ownership and is backed up with support from the entire chain of command, allowing operation in alignment with safety standards of CE-SOHMS and 385-1-1.

We Energies retained GEI Consultants to complete remedial design and construction for Operable Unit 2 in the Milwaukee Estuary by hydraulically dredging contaminated sediments and placing a residual sand cover. Project execution required completing several high-risk tasks adjacent to active public boardwalks and working in the Milwaukee River during peak use season, adding concern for public safety to GEI’s standard focus on employee safety.

WEDA and the Safety Commission were pleased to present awards to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock, Matthews Brothers, CEDA, GEI Consultants, and theU.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg Districtfor their outstanding contributions to the dredging industry in the name of safety.
