DETROIT, MI — Detroit is celebrating a riverfront revival built on parks, trails, public access and billions of dollars in waterfront reinvestment.

Now, officials say the next phase of Detroit River restoration involves something less visible: polluted sediment on the river bottom.

On Monday, June 8, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced $10 million for work meant to set up future sediment cleanup in a river that still bears the legacy of industrial contamination, untreated waste discharges, stormwater runoff and habitat loss.
