After more than four years and lengthy litigation, a Singaporean company has paid UAH 64.8 million in damages caused by the release of 8.4 tonnes of palm oil in the waters of the seaport «Pivdennyi».
According to the State Ecological Inspectorate, the incident occurred on 30 April 2020, and a report was drawn up against the captain of the STAVANGER vessel. The amount of damage caused to the state was $2.4 million (over UAH 64 million). However, the company refused to compensate for the damage, so the case was taken to court.
On 11 July 2022, the Commercial Court of Odesa Region partially upheld the claim of the environmental inspection, ordering the company to pay damages. Despite this, the money was not paid for a long time.
«It was only through persistent and systematic cooperation with international institutions that the case was finally resolved. On 17 January 2025, the damages were paid in full», the agency said.
As a reminder, in April 2020, palm oil was discharged at the port of «Pivdennyi» in Odesa region as a result of an accident.
