Zumbro River Dredging to Start in Rochester

Posted on November 27, 2018

Dredging is expected to start Monday on the Zumbro River from the Broadway Bridge near Soldiers Field to the area near the Mayo Civic Center.

The removal of sediment from the flood control channels helps maintain the proper channel capacity to handle flooding, since the loss of channel capacity could lead to water leaving the channel.

The project, which is expected to be completed by Dec. 31, is the fourth time the entire channel has been dredged since the flood control project was completed in 1995.

The work will have impacts for trail users, as well as motorists.

The bike trail along the south side Zumbro River by the city-county Government Center will be closed during the project, but the bike trail along the north side of the river by the Mayo Civic Center will remain open.

The sidewalk along the eastern side of Third Avenue Southeast will be closed from the Lakewood Square building exit to the bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists should follow detour signs.

Additionally, trucks hauling sediment will be accessing the work site along Third Avenue south of the bridge and on Fourth Street Southeast near the surface parking lot east of Third Avenue. As a result, a Third Avenue travel lane will be closed south of the bridge to allow trucks to make the turn from the bike path.
