Dredging started last week to open up the ocean bar and the shipping channel near the N.C. Port of Morehead City.
The Dutra Group is working on the $7.8 million project, which is being paid for with federal funding.
The project is being split into to two areas called Range A and Range B, for a total of 665,000 cubic yards of material being dredged.
Originally, this project was slated to take place in June or July, was pushed back to accommodate other projects elsewhere. The original project timeline had dredging scheduled from July through November. The new end date has not been announced.
A mechanical dredge, Paula Lee, and scows are being used to complete the work.
This project will bring the ocean bar down to 43 feet, with two additional feet to spare. The authorized depth is 45 feet.
This area was last dredged last year to a depth of 41 feet, but shoaling quickly created problems again.
