Work Planned For Lagoons This Summer

There will be some work done out at the lagoons southeast of Weyburn this summer. City Council accepted the request for proposal from Taber Solids Control, an Edmonton based company, at Monday’s city council meeting.

The work will see nearly 7,000 m³ of biosolids removed via dredging from the primary and diversionary lagoons. The RFP accepted came in at a price of just over $191,000. The city had budgeted $167,000 for the project, so the scale may be adjusted to bring things in line with the funding made available in the budget.

The Director of Engineering for the City of Weyburn, Nader Keshta, explained the work does need to be done on a regular schedule.

“For the main lagoon, it’s every five years, and pretty much we are on track this one,” he explained. “We are five years now from when we commissioned the main lagoon.”

The diversionary lagoon will see sludge removed from around the inlets into the lagoon.

Work is expected to begin on the project on August 1st. Keshta said it should take around three weeks to complete.

One concern which was brought up during the city council meeting was the possibility of a smell wafting over the city from the lagoons while the dredging was underway. Keshta said there are a number of factors which will be dependent on the smell coming to the city proper, but the biggest will be the prevailing winds.
