Women’s history month is a reminder of the strength the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has and will gain through a high-quality and diverse team. We’re highlighting one of the women on our workforce – Megan Murphy – who joined the USACE Buffalo District as an Engineering Intern during her third year studying at Cleveland State University.
During her time as an intern, Megan has been a part of civil works projects including the Cleveland Confined Disposal Facility (CDF) 10B, which is a holding location for dredged material removed from the Cleveland Harbor federal navigation channel.
Her internship provides her the opportunity to work part-time for the Buffalo District’s Cleveland Field Office during fall and spring academic semesters, and full time during the summer, helping to strike the balance between academic and on-the-job learning.
Internships like Megan’s offer practical experience and an inside look at the jobs performed by USACE engineers and other staff. They also come with the possibility of a transition to full-time employment once the internship is complete.
In between classes and work, Megan took some time to answer questions about herself and her experience as an engineering intern.
Q: Where are you from?
A: Parma, Ohio.
Q: What academic program are you in?
A: I am a third year Civil Engineering student, with a minor in Mathematics.
Q: What motivated you to take the position as a USACE intern?
A: I was interested in the position at USACE because I wanted to experience Civil Engineering in the real world, and not just in the classroom. For example, I had never been to a construction site before, and I wanted that experience to broaden my understanding of Civil Engineering.
Q: What are your plans following your internship?
A: I will be taking the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam as my first step to becoming a Professional Engineer (P.E.). I’d also like to experience the design side of Civil Engineering in the future.
Q: Would you recommend an internship with the USACE and why?
A: I would recommend an internship with USACE. My internship has allowed me to understand Civil Engineering to a fuller extent.
