Christmas came early for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District (USACE) after receiving an additional $9.3 million in appropriations on top of its already approved $65 million budget.
“The FY19 total appropriations provides about $74 million for Operations & Maintenance (O&M) of the District’s projects including maintenance dredging of multiple deep and shallow draft navigation harbors and channels. The District’s five multi-purpose reservoirs are included in the appropriations providing flood risk management, recreation, and other authorized purposes and services to the public,” according to a USACE press release.
So what does this mean for the region? Well, there will be an additional $5 million for dredging at Morehead City and an additional $2 million for dredging of the Wilmington Harbor.
“The FY19 appropriations are good news for the Wilmington District Civil Works program. It reflects an additional $5 million for additional dredging at Morehead City for dredging the Inner Harbor and another $2 million for additional dredging at Wilmington Harbor, and will allow us to execute critical work with the NC State Ports Authority,” said Wilmington District Commander Colonel Robert J. Clark. “In addition, we continue to appreciate the support from all of our local, state and federal stakeholders.”
Other locations maintained by the USACE include the Cape Fear River above Wilmington, Carolina Beach Inlet, Lockwoods Folly River, Masonboro Inlet, New River Inlet, Pamlico Sound, and Beaufort Harbor, and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.
